After we had visited the famous and breathtaking Taipei 101 tower, with an elevator ride to remember (84 floors in 37 seconds), we went for a stroll to the Taipei Flower Market. Also known as Jianguo Holiday Flower Market, it was a pleasant and relaxing way to spend an hour or so.
The flower market is only open on weekends, and occupies a long stretch of car park that is used during the week. It is cleverly situated under the JianGuo overpass, which provides cover from the weather regardless of the season, but still allows an open and airy feel.
At one end of the Taipei Flower Market is the Taipei Holiday Jade Market and across Xinyl road is Daan Forest Park, a must visit recreational area to escape from the noise of Taipei.
Taipei Flower Market (Jianguo Holiday Flower Market)
The Taipei Flower Market is quite long and has more than 200 stalls. Although it can be quite busy at peak periods, no one is in a rush and the atmosphere quite convivial.
The stalls range from picked and bunched flowers, potted plants, shrubs, a few large trees, water features, planting soil and pesticides, fish tanks, as well as seeds, gardening tools, and everything else a home gardener might need.
On top of this, there are some stands that may or may not be a permanent fixture at the flower market. On the day we visited there was a man selling honey (more on him below) as well as a mushroom stand.
The Honey Man
This man had a stall selling honey. It was delicious, but that wasn’t what caught my attention. It was this photo. I’m wondering at what point you say “okay bees, that’s far enough”.
How to get to Taipei Flower Market
Taipei Flower Market is open from 9.00am to 6.00pm on weekends.
The most convenient way to get to the market is to use the MRT (red line) and get off at Daan station. There are signs pointing you to the correct exit (6).
What is close to the Jianguo Holiday Flower Market?
It is possible to cover a few activities in the immediate area including:
Taipei 101
Taipei 101 is one of the more popular things to do in Taipei. We went to the flower market after visiting this landmark, and as the weather was nice, it made for a pleasant stroll.
Jianguo Weekend Jade Market
The Jiangou Weekend Jade Market is located at the end of the Jiangou Holiday Flower Market. The atmosphere here is a little less hectic than the Mandalay Jade Market in Myanmar.
Daan Forest Park
Just across Xinyl Road is the beautiful and relaxing Daan Forest Park, which is a great place to escape the noise of Taipei.
Glorious displays of nature in all its beauty. Even the honeyman was probably in his birthday suit under all those bees! Was it a tree or a really big bonsai?
Thanks for the image Stephen of the bee man being in his birthday suit!
That tree certainly has the shape of a large bonsai, although the upkeep would be a tremendous weekend activity.
