Central Market Phnom Penh (Phsar Thmei)

Central Market Phnom Penh

The attractive art-deco design of the Central Market Phnom Penh

Housed in an attractive art-deco building, the Central Market Phnom Penh is nicely laid-out and easy to navigate. In the centre of the market is an impressive jewelry and gemstone section, with stalls for other goods and fresh food fanning out from there.

On our multiple visits, we saw plenty of other tourists walking through so it sits high on many things to do in Phnom Penh lists, and not only will this Phnom Penh market take care of your shopping needs, it will satisfy your stomach with one of the best market food sections we found in our time in Phnom Penh.

Given it is a popular tourist spot, there are handicrafts, clothing, trinkets, electronics, and enough souvenir options to keep all friends and family back home happy.

One of the many dried fish vendors. Dried fish is very popular in Cambodian markets

But it is the food stalls that brought us back a second time. The biggest draw for on our first visit were the barbecue stations grilling huge squid over charcoal, alongside other fresh seafood such as prawns and octopus, as well as also serving crabs, clams, and other delicacies.

There were lots of other food stalls including noodle soups, rice dishes, desserts, fruit juices, and small bite sized pieces of green vegetables covered in fish cake being a favourite of mine.

Russian Market Phnom Penh (Phsar Toul Tom Poung)

russian market phnom penh

This was one of the wider laneways. The shops filled to the brim with a variety of goods.

For me, the Russian Market, known as Phsar Toul Tom Poung, this was the most interesting Phnom Penh Market, and certainly my favourite for walking around the labrynth of tight walkways and discovering some of the more diverse stalls I’ve come across.

Known as the Russian Market due its popularity with Russian Expats back in the eighties, the market has a surprise around every corner, with motor parts being for sale next to fruit stalls next to DVDs and CDs with the most interesting stall being one selling trolley parts

There are Western sized clothes which shows it is still popular with expats of today, and also evident with the hard bargaining required to buy handicrafts, as we discovered with immovable higher prices for simple local paintings.

The food section also offered many good local options and we enjoyed a lunch of fish and noodles and a nice dessert from a small vendor who had set up in one of the walkways.

Night Market Phnom Penh

A relaxing place to enjoy some Cambodian Street Food

One of the newer Phnom Penh attractions, the night market in Phnom Penh is not your typical Cambodia market, and is a great addition to the lifestyle in Phnom Penh at night.

It is a great place to visit during a walk along the relaxing Riverside Phnom Penh promenade and is close to the Phnom Penh nightlife precinct.

There is a large seating area where picnic mats have been laid on the ground so visitors can sit and enjoy freshly cooked food, listening to music from the large stage which hosts singers, musicians, and dancers.

There is a well-stocked clothing section with plenty of clothing options, with a lot of those on sale for 10,000 Riels.

Orussey Market Phnom Penh

Orussey Market is more of a commercial centre, running over 3 very busy floors with not a lot of room for manouvering. This market is not the place to be in a hurry.

It is one of the busiest places to visit in Phnom Penh, and certainly the place to find some of the more unique goods.

Meat hang off hooks at markets throughout Cambodia

Phsar Chas is one of the best markets in Phnom Penh for the locals, and is a great place to visit to experience a more authentic local market with your time in Phnom Penh.

The wet section is very busy with meats hanging from hooks, fruit and vegetables stands spilling over with fresh produce, and locals eating noodles for breakfast.

The old market is often used for Phnom Penh tours and cooking classes, and whilst a great place to visit, there aren’t any souvenir stalls so it may not suit everyone’s Cambodia shopping trip.
