Mama Oliech is a popular restaurant known for its Kenyan Cuisine
Mama Oliech is an iconic establishment in the hustle and bustle of Nairobi. It is said to be home to some of the best-cooked fish in Nairobi.
From Tilapia served dry or wet (without or with sauce), white or brown ugali, to a range of sides, this famous restaurant will serve up a delightful start to Kenya Food.
Regulars and tourists alike flock for the unbeatable combination: quality, quantity and flavor all rolled into one.
The Mama Oliech has a casual atmosphere, with outdoor seating available
I found the experience of visiting Mama Oliech relaxed and certainly unrushed. We were seated outdoors whilst there were plenty of indoor seating options as well.
The chairs and bench seats were comfortable and we had a fan oscillating above us for some necessary breeze. There was the ubiquitous large-screen TV broadcasting Premier League
Traditional Kenyan Dishes such as Ugali (a maize flour dish), Grilled Fish, and Fried Chicken
The menu at this restaurant is delightful for anyone who enjoys East African cuisine. You can try their one-of-a-kind ugali, a maize flour dish that is irreplaceable when eaten with the right ingredients, or, just as Mark Zuckerberg did, maybe a plate of grilled fish with a house sauce to fully maximize the flavor.
Or if you just want something quick and easy, they even offer kuku—fried chicken that is prepared with special herbs and spices.
The food was cooked well and reasonably priced.
We had the Fish Special Zuckerberg. This was a whole grilled Tilapia fish with house-made sauce, ugali, kachumbari (a tomato and onion salad), and a plate of rice.
The fish was as fresh as you’d expect from a busy restaurant that has that as its main seller, and it was cooked well, still a touch moist.
The kachumbari was refreshing, the rice fine, and the ugali great mixed with the fish and sauce.
Although it is best to tuck in using your (right) hand, cutlery is also served for those not wanting to experience Kenyan Food down the front of their shirt.
Overall, Mama Oliech is a great option for those looking for authentic Kenyan food in Nairobi
Mama Oliech is a must-try for anyone visiting Nairobi. The restaurant offers superb Kenyan cuisine at reasonable prices.
